District Announcements

From the Blue Print Editor: June 22, 2010

This is an informational piece by Editor Andy Erickson:

Lion Andy urges every club in the District to publish a bulletin. Club bulletins are an excellent way for clubs to keep their members informed not only of Club activities and events, but also of District, Multiple District and International events and activities of potential interest. Not all lions have access to email or the Web Site, and so this is a good way to keep them from feeling left out. He has written an informative article Why Club Bulletins? on the subject, with suggestions on how to go about it the right way.

First VDG Kertice Poon Wants Your Help! March 3, 2010

Calling all proofreaders and members who like to work with publication files and can input into the computer! We are in the process of redesigning and restructuring the District Directory. Looking for individuals who would be willing to do some computer input and for individuals who love to proof read. If you are that Lion please e-mail your information to: PDG Lion Barry Fredenburg at barryfr@hotmail.com, Lion Barry will let you know what part of the directory you will be working on or if you want to be a proof reader. The advertising section will also take on a new look. Advertisers will be put into categories according to subject content. Sample of categories, Auto, Real Estate, Legal & Professional Services, House wares, Business Services, to name a few. PDGs will have their own category should they decide to advertise and support the directory along with Lions Clubs. We will be also taking advertisement from non-lion members. The goal is to have the advertising support the publication expense so that more members will be able to receive a copy. There is a limited budget amount for directory expense. That is why only a few directories are free to the each club. With your support, we can get the directory to a majority of our Lion members for a nominal fee, if possible free. Together we can make a difference.

Reminder: PU 101s - please postmark by April 15th, page 133, in District Directory, get 500 points towards Top Club contest.

We make a difference when we serve with our heads, hands and hearts.

This Resolution Passed by the San Rafael Host LIONS Club Board of Directors on February 27, 2010.

Howard Levenson, Acting Secretary

Supporting Reasons for Resolution:

1. MD-4 and the Student Speakers Committee have no plans to place any information about the Annual Student Speakers Contest on the Internet.
2. No information is available on the Internet or the MD-4 Website (www.md4lions.org ) about the Annual Student Speakers Contest.
3. Interested contestants, parents, teachers, school counselors, school administrators, LIONS Club officers, Club members, Contest Chairs, Contest Committee Members, community leaders need to have immediate access to all relevant Contest information.
4. The majorities of potential student contestants commonly use the internet for school, to access information, and look for information about the Contest on Internet.
5. Information the Internet about the Contest will encourage by potential contest to enter the Contest, and more LIONS Clubs will have more participation and exposure in their communities.
6. The Student Speakers Foundation will be enhanced by it exposure on the same website.
7. Publicity about the Contest will enhance potential new members to join a LIONS Club.
8. LIONS International encourages LIONS Clubs to use the Internet to expose the Clubs and their activities to their community, and encourage prospective members to join LIONS in community service.
9. The Internet is seen today as the "information highway". What better way to encourage more participation in the Student Speakers Contest then to have it available on the Internet?
10. The placement of the Student Speakers Contest onto the Internet will increase the legitimacy of the Contest, and provide easy access to the contest by those seeking information about it. IT IS CONVENTION TIME, A TIME OF RENEWAL AND FUN

Girl Scout Troop Collects Used Eyeglasses for LIONS

San Rafael Girl Scout Troop 32387 collected used eyeglasses for LIONS as a Community Service Merit Badge Project. They designed and decorated their own Collection Box that was placed at their School, and sent notes home with each students asking the parents to contribute any outgrown and unused eyeglasses they had.

LION Dr. Howard Levenson was contacted by the Troop Leader, and asked if he would give the Troop information about where the glasses end up and how they are used. He attended a Troop meeting and gave information about the LIONS in Sight Program. He explained how the glasses are collected and processed, and how clinics are organized and conducted in various parts of the World by Lions and doctors to help those people who have no resources for eyecare in their villages.

LION Levenson said, "the Girl Scouts were very interested to learn what they had done to help others, and how the LIONS help others in need." As a reward for their service, Dr. Levenson presented each Girl Scout with a San Rafael LIONS "fly'n Lions Trading Pin. They all appreciated having the pin.
